Into the Routine

Silas woke one morning to find Death standing over his bed, which was becoming an unfortunate pattern.

"Most people would be terrified to wake up to Death looming over them," he groaned, rolling away from her. "Me? I just have to wonder what you're about to throw my way."

"Tutoring." Death reached out and snatched the blankets off him in one smooth motion. He scowled and tried to roll over again, but she grabbed him and yanked him out of bed with a practiced twist. "Now."

He hit the floor and groaned, then slowly waved her aside and staggered to his feet. "Don't I have school? It's Tuesday."

"The classes run every day," Death said. "But if you'll recall your original agreement, your mandatory attendance is only three days a week. You are only obligated to be there on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday."

"Then why have I been going every day?" He scowled.

"Because you've been trying to catch up." She crossed her arms. "But today, your education is with me. Look, the inner workings of the Academy aren't your business. What is your business is getting downstairs, right now, and getting to work."

"Alright." He yawned and stretched. "I'll be right down."

"I'll wait." Death sat down on the corner of his bed. "No blowing me off and taking thirty minutes to get down there."

Silas stared back at her, then looked down at his nightclothes. "Ahh... Could you wait outside?"

"Whatever you've got, I've seen it before." Death shrugged. "I'm sort of old, you know."

"I don't really care what you've seen before." Silas scowled. "You realize that I have a steady girlfriend, right? She finds out that you were in here while I was changing, and you'll have a new soul to collect. And, if you really want me to lay out the stats, if I die, then you won't have a nice summer home to keep spending your time in, so really—"

"Alright, alright. You've made your point." Death slowly rose from the bed and started toward the door. There, though, she paused. "That said, if you were to die, the estate would simply pass to your third cousin, Henrietta Beckham."

"I have a third cousin?" Silas blinked in surprise.

"Three of them, actually, and fifteen fourth cousins." She paused. "You then have almost sixty fifth cousins. That branch of the family became Catholic, and they've grown quite numerous. The point is that if you die, I can find other willing people to tend—"

"OUT!"

Death rolled her eyes and strode out of the door, and it fell shut with a loud thump. Silas sighed, then went ahead and got dressed. He didn't want her to come barging back in. That would certainly provide the brownies with plenty of speculation.

Far too soon, he found himself down in the study. Death dropped a book onto the table in front of him, then sat down across from him. She folded her hands, and he slowly reached to flip the book open.

"First..." She held up a finger. "You should determine if the book is a mimic or not.
